Learn movement and aiming as separate decisions

At a moment when you can see the area clearly, move with W, A, S and D while keeping track of the character's position. Then use the mouse to aim and hold the firing input as described on the play page. Movement and aiming are independent: retreating does not require aiming in the direction you are walking. Practise that separation before trying to react to several threats at once.

For one encounter, choose a visible space to move toward and a separate target to aim at. Update those decisions when the scene changes rather than holding a direction indefinitely. Read the facility's visible prompts and passages before assuming an opening is the next route. This guide is for the browser edition's desktop controls and WebGL scene; it does not substitute an imagined touch layout, a different shooter's equipment system or an untested sequence of objectives.

Review position before blaming aim

After a difficult encounter, ask whether you had enough space to keep moving. Aiming more carefully will not necessarily solve a position that leaves no clear exit. Conversely, moving constantly can still fail if you stop tracking the intended target. Choose one factor to practise: recognize an exit before advancing, or keep the pointer on a target while changing movement direction. A specific observation makes the next attempt easier to evaluate.

Use visible feedback to decide whether a passage, prompt or encounter changed. Do not treat every pause as a missing button or try to solve it by refreshing the page immediately. If the game genuinely fails to render, the troubleshooting information on the play page is the right starting point; gameplay practice cannot repair a browser rendering problem. The checklist here is a temporary reminder, not an in-game mission tracker, account save or claim that a particular route guarantees completion.

For one practice encounter, try moving away from a visible threat while continuing to aim toward it. Notice whether your pointer remains on the intended target as the character changes position. On the next attempt, reverse the emphasis: read the available movement space first and then maintain aim while using it. Compare the decision you found harder. This exercise keeps two controls distinct and gives you a concrete focus, while the facility prompts continue to supply the actual objective. It does not require assuming where an unseen enemy or passage will appear.

Underrun questions and answers

Why is a desktop recommended?

This edition is documented and tested around WASD movement and mouse aiming. A mobile listing is not evidence of equivalent touch controls.

Why might the game fail to start?

It requires a browser with working WebGL. If loading fails, retry from the player controls or choose another game rather than disabling browser security protections.

Who created the original?

The source is phoboslab’s Underrun. The reviewed edition retains MIT source licensing and the recorded zlib audio licensing.

How can I retreat while continuing to fire at a creature?

Keep the mouse pointed toward the threat while using WASD to move into open space. The aiming direction and walking direction are separate, so you do not need to stand still to fire. Check the passage behind you before retreating; backing into a wall removes the space that makes this tactic useful.
